When you aren’t able to boot up in safe mode you leave your computer highly compromised.

Why XP Won’t Boot in Safe Mode

Because it’s so crucial when things go wrong many people realize that they can’t access safe mode when they need it the most. There are a few likely causes why you won’t be able to access this mode.

  • Your computer is unable to access all of the drivers that it needs to load up Safe mode.
  • Your Operating System did not install correctly or is otherwise damaged.
  • There is a virus preventing you from entering Safe Mode. This is one of the more insidious causes, as it can be hard to remove viruses outside of Safe Mode.
  • You have serious problems with your computer’s registry.

Accessing Safe Mode Again

While frustrating, XP won’t boot in Safe Mode problems are usually pretty easy to fix. It usually requires running through a number of different options until one hits, as it can be hard to identify what the real problem is.

  • Start by making sure all of your drivers are up to date and that you are using the most recent version of XP. Getting a Driver Updater like Driver Checker makes this process very easy.
  • Run your antivirus and eliminate any threats that are identified. Restart your computer and do this again. If any pieces of malware persist than set your antivirus to run on startup before your OS fully loads. Restart your computer, let your antivirus run, and eliminate any threats identified.   • As a last resort you can attempt to reinstall Windows XP completely. This is a somewhat drastic measure, especially if you don’t back up your files before implementing the reinstall, so make sure you’ve tried everything else out first.

Not Quite the Last Resort

There’s a good chance that you’re dealing with XP won’t boot in Safe Mode problems due to issues within your computer’s registry. Damaged files in your registry have a bad habit of spreading and wreaking all sorts of miscellaneous havoc throughout your system, so clearing out your registry is a surprisingly effective way to be able to access Safe Mode again. Many people find success by getting and running a registry cleaner without implementing any of the other fixes mentioned in this article.

Inside there you will find Administrative Tools. Double click on this to edit it and then type “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools”.

Close registry editor and restart your computer to see if this solves the problem.

System Works Installation

If this error pops up when you are using Norton System Works then you should follow a few different steps.

Open the regedit application and find “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\User Shell Files

Delete all of the information in the value data text box and enter “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs”.
